As per Tim's command:
"List 5 reasons why you are a geek. And make them good reasons. Justify them. Explain them. Be loud and proud about how big of a geek you are! Then pick the 5 biggest geeks you know and have them do the meme."

1. I'm taking a Unix class this Summer, just for fun.

2. I get to attend the San Diego Comic Con for free as a professional every year, and (in the past) my job has paid me for the time.
That means I'm such a big geek people pay me to go geek out over media stuff. I have not missed a Comic Con since I was eight.

3. I can play video games via brain computer interface better than anyone else at the CNL lab.

4. When I was in elementary school, I had a fondness for Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, and /The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, Across the 8th Dimension/.

5. I have keen rubber stamp collection, including church of the sub genius stamps. In fact I have super cool toys in general, transformers, Shadowrun and Akira figures, Santaria demon repelling air freshener, you get the idea. Over a two year period four (unrelated) people gave me a slinky as a present. I'm not sure why, but I'm sure it says something about me.

Called Out:

I was thinking Gower and Professor Mortis, but they have already been fingered for this one. zeinrich doesn't actually have a lj, so i can't really list him. bah.

Ok, maybe I'm just crazy, but I seem to remember an advertisements that no one else (out here at least) does.
Do you recall a painkiller (tylenol?) ad with Pinhead from Hellraiser?
It was a very simple ad. Pinhead rises up on a platform and says
"I don't care what they tell you, This hurts."
and holds up the pill bottle.

Also, does anyone know the lyrics to the Brandeis drinking song?

I start at the new retail job on Thursday, hopefully it will not last for long.
crosses fingers and hopes to hear back from the science museum or UCSD...

On a different note, I am probably hopelessly behind the times, but i just discovered bastard pop and cut ups. 80%+ is awful stuff. But there are a few funny things. I really like the idea of how extreme it is. It makes me miss my book 'Will Pop Eat Itself?" It's like a whole subculture where the KLF won.

I am in a costuming frenzy! Racine and Laramie needs new vests. I'm making a green and gold victorian brocade one with black collar/lining, and a burgundy and black floral vest. My father wants a double breasted version for himself. Then I'm going to be working more in Old Town, so I'm getting out all my accessories, bleaching out my battenburg lace parasol, organizing my chatelaine, etc.
Then the guys are on a cool historical clothing kick, so I'm going to figure out good patterns for turn of the century dandy-ish stuff. I rally hope I complete at least some of these things before I run out of creative steam. I have been really productive making stamps, painting, making art cards with my sister, etc. I have so many things, I need to put them on hold to finish my final paper for the semester. Ah, avoiding work.

This week I have gotten to work on archeology digs in old town. It's very fun, but It's really sunny and hot. I'm trying to stay more focused on the Nissan project, but it's so tempting to dig in the dirt all day, helping to find buried treasure (of the historical kind.) I was thinking about continuing on with the archeology when the Nissan thing ends, but I better not. I don't see it holding my interest for a very long time, and my resume is crazy sounding enough as it is.
Tomorrow my family is taking me to Disneyland.

I went to the Southern California Writers conference last night. I really had never realized that Saturday night there was a lot of drinking there.
estupendocero teased me: "Writers, _drinking_?! Who would ever imagine writers would drink!". I have known many of the people at that conference since I was eight years old. They are extended family to me, and I have always been the kid. So it it was a little weird to be invited to drink with them. It made me feel old.

Well, I'm off to my sisters Ren. Faire meetup thingy.

incoherent laundry list of good [Feb. 5th, 2005|11:30 am]

What a good week I have had!
I got to meet two interesting people (rare stuff out here.) One is an art student from Korea by way of New Zealand, she's interested in time based art and feminist response art. I was well served by all my Pam Allara/Brandeis art class knowledge. I did not get to quote "And this, is the pussy from the black lagoon, bah-hah!" but I'm sure it's just around the corner.. The other person I met is a materials engineer who works on batteries and nano tech, and who likes politics and sci-fi. Yay! I'm happy that I got to have such fun conversations with random people.

This weekend i get to go urban exploring in L.A. and Riverside with friends, I'm looking forward to that.

There was a biotech conference at UCSD that had crazy schwag. My favorite was the lab animal supply keychains showing a rat, in doctoral robes, running with a syringe tucked under his arm. I also got a door prize, the DVD of The Street Fighter, with Sonny Chiba.

My friend Tyler made me cool buttons, one is the button (alpha 60) they wear in Alphaville, the other is from the Ghost in the Shell T.V. series of the Laughing Man. They both look very good.

I fixed the old sewing machine that has been unoperational for years. Then I started sewing a quilt top. it's pretty cool so far. It's a tumbling blocks pattern done in stripes, so each block faces lines help direct which way the block faces. I also have been cooking up a storm for people. How domestic! Now if only I could convince myself that I should clean...

Other than that, the funding for my project may be coming to a close. I'm not sure how I feel about that. Working on intelligent driver support is not as cool as brain computer interfaces, but it does pay more money. At least I feel like I'm starting to be able to get some meaningful models out of my research, which has been a struggle. I wish I could tell you guys about some of the problems I have encountered, but I can't, yet.

I got a press pass for the linux desktop conference coming up this month, and Iook forward to going to that.

My sister is setting up a benefit to aid the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. It will be this Summer. I'm having fun helping her plan bands and entertainment for the event.

Ed came by and visited me, and made a payment of some of the money he owes me. It's great to see him and be able to just hang out without any drama.

Well, I got a new car for the new year. It's used, and old, but it will sure beat taking the bus everywhere. I don't know what upkeep costs are going to be like. I was considering buying a new digital camera (my old one records to floppies, and is big) or mayhaps a sewing machine (Alexander is making noises about wanting victorian costuming for Racine and Laramie's) But, I am going to /try/ to be good and back off on the spending until I know exactly what is happening with the funding for my work, etc.

Right now I'm listening to car talk (good and nostalgia-y) and stressing out about the lack of interesting results I have to present to Nissan right now. I still have a month to find something interesting, keep your fingers crossed. I just got finished reading angel_electric's lj and thinking of how glamorous things are for her right now. I seldom think about all the things I have been doing, but my past few weeks have been fun. Visiting, music, family, adventures... her lj reminded me of how cool things really are right now.

Things are going well, I had a lovely new year at the house with friends. I hope all are having a wonderful new year!

Between work and health and the rest of life I never get to update my LJ. But I was just thinking about how much I value all your friendships and wanted to tell you so. Thank you all for being wonderful people, I am happy I know you. There is not one person on my friends list that I don't really really think makes the world a better place.
